"The American Pine Marten is a four legged, two-pound package of pure animal energy. A cute face hides the sharp hunting and killing skills of this sharp tooth and clawed wilderness predator that roams the woods around my home. Large, furry feet allow this tireless traveler to run on top of the snow as it searches for mice and squirrels. Thirty years ago, the population was nearly extinct in the forests around Ravenwood. Now, they are back in healthy numbers. Almost every day this winter I’ve encountered this fearless friend on the trails near my home They often seem to be unafraid of me. No one really knows why different species show varying degrees of caution towards humans. It makes me smile to be reminded of this success story. So many animals are telling a sad and different account around the world today." - Jim Brandenburg
