The first of two great festivals of sacred dance takes place at the Tibetan monastery at Shechen in Nepal, during the last days of the Tibetan calendar (around February). Their purpose is to avert the obstacles of the coming year. The ritual and the dances complete a ceremony that will have lasted an entire week, day and night.
