“The winter wolves of Ravenwood and the nearby Boundary Waters wilderness usually wear a thick grey coat. Occasionally, I will see a black individual. The old-timers called them Siberians. According to local legend, they were “bigger and smarter” than the other wolves. Very light or near-white wolves are more rare, and carry no special name. I have only seen these beauties a couple of times outside of the Arctic, where a white coat is more normal. A light- colored Timber Wolf in a snowfall is truly an arresting sight in our north woods of Minnesota.“ - Jim Brandenburg
