MR2551 Sacred dance of sixteen heroes

The sacred Tibetan dance of Sixteen Heroes (Gings) presents a symbolism that is most complex and profound. It concerns the spiritual energies linking the mind and the body. The sixteen heroes represent sixteen essences (bindu) whose movements in the subtle veins (nadi) are expressed by the transmutations of energy, or vital “wind” (prana). The multicolored fans attached to various parts of the masks of these gings signify that these last are surrounded by rainbow-colored lights. Their tiger skin skirts symbolize the sublimation of ordinary passion. The three flags above the mask represent the three jewels: Buddha, Dharma (his teaching), and Sangha (the community of disciples). Monastery of Trongsar, Bhutan, 2007.
