Women in a village in the state of Jharkhand in India learn to read and write. Jharkhand is mainly inhabited by tribal populations that have been frequently displaced, as this state is the richest in India in mineral resources that are exploited by large companies. Most of the tribes have now left the forests to live in well-kept and beautifully decorated villages. Karuna-Shechen intervenes to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants: medical care, rainwater harvesting, literacy and vocational training for adult women, cooperative education programs through play in kindergarten classes, medical care, creation of sixty thousands vegetable gardens to supplement their existing food supply, and other interventions within the program “Small money, big change.” 2017.
