Lake Tuz, Central Anatolia, Turkey. This very shallow lake (1-2 meters) is normally 80 km long and 50 km wide, at an altitude of 905 m above sea level. The lake’s waters have an extremely high salinity, and in summer the water evaporates almost completely, exposing a salt deposit averaging 30 cm thick. In winter, some of the salt dissolves back into the fresh water introduced into the lake as a result of heavy winter rainfall. The extraction of salt from the lake, which accounts for 70% of the salt consumed in Turkey. In 2001, Lake Tuz and the surrounding steppe were declared a protected area. Turkey’s largest nesting colony of pink flamingos resides on a group of islands in the southern part of the lake.
