Turbans worn by the men from the valley of Dzongsar in eastern Tibet are made of woven fabric from the distant Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. This nomad also sports a necklace of coral and dzi beads. Dzi beads are distinctive agate stones inlaid with white ‘drawings’ found in the high Himalayas and said to bring good luck to their owners. This man has put on his best festive clothes to welcome Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, the head of Dzongsar Monastery who has come from Bhutan, where he lives for part of the year. He had not been able to return for a long time. August 2004.
